There is a mix of reasons and some have to do with the weather as “binge” drinking is pretty normal in the West although its often done in the evening but in the Philippines people seem to start drinking earlier.
Then there is the conflict of societies where some days you just want to switch off which leaves people just wanting to escape especially if they are in isolated environments away from other Expat’s as most people won’t understand what they are complaining about.
The price of beer is also another reason as in places like the UK beer can be as much as P600 a hit for less than the size of a Grande so too much of a good thing is another reason.
Being an expat people often feel isolated from their own communities and integrating takes time. Beer is a brain numbing experience that keeps things sane for many the problem happens when people don’t know when to call it a day.
One thing I will say though I have yet to meet a foreigner who says he drinks less in the Philippines as socially its a norm and drink driving is still not an issue in the Philippines as long as you don’t crash.. I can’t see it changing anytime soon and no doubt the cheap alcohol is going to be here longer than I am..
Quick note!! I don’t drink too much its written as an observation and my own consumption has cut back a huge amount since December. To be honest I probably drank more in the UK than I do here.. But that is purely down to choice and too much going on. But I do understand others offloading onto a few beers to reduce stress levels as they are probably the highest I have experienced in my lifetime due to a completely different culture.
