Water apple – Syzygium samarangense

Wandering around this morning its good to see the water apples starting to form up soon be time to eat. Another reason for posting the photo is probably many people out there are like me that don’t know what you can and can’t eat and even more so don’t know what things are so here is the water apples that are growing outside our front door.

An important factor if looking to grow these plants is that they can grow upto 12 metres high at the same time once mature can deliver up to 700 water apples. There are different colours and the white or black ones have a higher value. If eaten normally the cores are removed first although here we just munch on them. Good for salads as well, something else I learned this morning though is they also contain oleanolic acid which is a known compound in anti-HIV treatment.

When you look round the plants here its amazing what you come across and the fact there seems to be things to help treatments for all sorts. Nope I am not going all herbal and of course most medical cures come from plants but it just amazes me people will buy vitamins and medicines yet very often they have better and organic cures sat in their garden.

Remove the core, quarter the fruit and dip in a black soy sauce mixed with sliced chillies and a dash of sugar! Great snack.
