University of the Philippines Wins UAAP Cheerdance Competition
For the first time the University of the Philippines PEP squad stepped away from Filipino themed routines and went for Madonna that resulted in yet another win giving them their second straight crown in the UAAP Cheerdance Competition at packed the Smart Araneta Coliseum Saturday.
In front of the 20,842 person crowd the squad donning blonde hair and wearing tight body hugging black and maroon suits put on their flawless performance. The performance guaranteed a fourth win out of the last five years competing in the cheerdance championship.
Far Eastern University squad finished in third place with a Bollywood rendition routine that started strong but was hampered by a fall on the left side of a pyramid late in the performance.
"Antonio said all squads did well this year, but they were confident — though not assured of winning — that the team will achieve their goal of winning with their Madonna-inspired piece.
"Bonus yung pagkapanalo," he said. "Hindi namin hinihingi pero binigay."
Team captain Kae Madrigal, a graduating education senior, called their routine "perfect."
"Iba yung dating," co-skipper Laurence Bautista also told Yahoo! College Hoops. "Clean pero sobrang challenging ng level of difficulty so we got the edge."
Head judge Ai Hasegawa of the International Federation of Cheerleading praised UP’s amazing performance.
"They were very good," the Japanese representative said. "Their stunts were difficult but were very stable."
The prize money for the event may not be the reason why so many people compete but was definitily a good incentive with the winners taking home P340,000 second place P200,000 and third place 140,000 all from Samsung.
Nesza Salvador also from University of the Philippines took the Samsung Stunner Award.
