The Brain Drain

Over the last couple of years the expression “Brain Drain” is going on all over the planet. I’m just wondering where the majority of brains are going.. Now I know locations such as the Philippines its a case of the well educated given an opportunity to go to another country for everything from being an engineer, doctor, nurse to a nanny etc. But the big problem is what happens if you lose all a countries well educated? I haven’t been in the Philippines long enough to see if the standard of education has dropped because of the brain drain which has allowed teachers etc. to move to another country for a better life or that the type of education is the problem. I have met a lot of people over the time I’m in the Philippines from all walks of life and around 90% of people don’t even know where the UK is never mind other countries. Now don’t get me wrong its not an attack on the Philippines as I look at the UK system and I can see that the exams are getting easier year on year out to allow fudging of figures aswell as universities “having to” accept people from “deprived areas” with poorer grades over good grades and nice areas. It can only damage the system. Now a brain drain in the UK has a different affect because its not the engineers etc. that are a major issue although there is plenty of vacancies but the fact that well educated, career minded and business orientated people leave each year in droves which not only do you lose the brains but you also lose the money. The Philippines on the other hand has an inward economy which is relying on its overseas workers to support their families back home so have pretty much tied the people to the country. But the UK? I find a lot of people have left bitter of the country and the way they feel treated. Me I see the UK as a factory and no longer a homeland it has abandoned me as it has many others before me.

So where are all the brains going? Well I was part of the furniture industry back in the recession of the 90s and most manufacturers moved to eastern Europe because it was the only way to survive. Now your seeing the sleeping dragon awake in China this has sent a new wave of brains and money to Asia. What a lot of countries aren’t realising is filling this void is near impossible and why there are so many gaps opening up in the UK medical services for example. The next stage will be getting things done will become harder due to a lack of lecturers and even skilled trades as things move to a new Era. The recession is a glitch that most countries badly affected will never recover from. Mainly because Asia is starting to get its act together with manufacturing and also quality. They have the money.. a tax system built for manufacturing and now the missing link has been given on a plate the business owners and developers.

duh?! I do think you have met enough Filipinos for you to conclude that 90% of them don’t even know what UK or where UK is. Considering that brothels and some sleazy bars are places where most expats are habitues , I dont think  the people there are good candidates to gauge Philippine education in general.

    Hi Elaine,
your right that a lot of expats go to the Bikini bars but im not one of them and neither is my wife associated with such bars. Infact my wife is a university graduate and very smart. BUT we do have a lot of people we know who are graduates aswell but dont know locations geographically. The assumption that I am associated with the clubs is wrong and infact there is a change in a lot of the expats going to the Philippines as there seems to be a new generation like myself who are the 25+ bracket who have little or no interest in the bars and looking to settle into a normal life in the Philippines.

I’ve lived in the Philippines for 3.5 years because the USofA isn’t able to provide me the environment I need to do my business.  I dont like the US’s taxes, the way the spend money they dont have and then expecting me and my children to pay for it.  I remember in the movie Time Cop with Van Dam the guy runing for president said he wanted to make the top 10% richer and the rest can move to Mexico for a better life.  Looks like the real politicians are taking that to heart.

I agree totally.. in the UK there is an assumption that getting rid of the Labour government is going to fix the UK problems. But lets have a look at the real problems.. Over expanded NHS (Free medical care). Railways, Power grid, Water, Telephone and all infrustructure was sold off. Most of it happened in CONSERVATIVE Years who are about to retake power. The labour government have expanded the civil servants beyond sustainability and also the NHS. BUT not in a positive way in Worcester for example a Labour Top of the range SUPER Hospital as they call it was built. Its replaced :- Redditch Hospital, Kidderminster Hospital, Worcester Castle Street Hospital, Worcester Ronkswood Hospital and supposed to have already bulldozed Worcester Newtown hospital but they havent due to the new hospital being overloaded.. The new Hospital is about 50% of the size of any of the old ones its a complete sham. Ive worked on it and there are faults all over it from design to general wear and tear. Ive seen Convicts chained to Ambulance beds sitting in a corridor having fits from drug over doses and in the same line of beds in the corridor as the general public. These are out of prying eyes because its for “Ambulance Access Only” It resembles more of a hospital just after a major crisis as its flooded with people 24/7.

Whats my point to this? The fact is there is no Labour or Conservative, Liberal or any of the other parties as they are pretty much all in bed with each other. If you noticed the government were pushing for Gordon Brown to go last week in the UK and in reality this is what happened :-
Gordon Brown got the support of the Unions.. most of the MPs in Labour are supported by the Unions they line theyre corrupt pockets and keep them elected. So funnily enough Gordon Brown kept control because the politicians are like pigs in a trough.. “whats in it for me” there is no interest in the country or anything else its all to do with personal gain. Hazel Blears (not sure how her name is spelled but i really cant be bothered wasting time searching as i cant stand the woman) But she was one of the main pushers to get rid of Gordon Brown and what now.. ? She is kissing arse trying to gain favour in the hope she can scratch a new job from the Labour Party.. nothing more than a poision dwarf.
