A fourteen year old youth was busy painting in his classroom when he saw a man wearing a pink bull cap and dark sunglasses, black T shirt and Jeans hiding behind a water dispenser. He didn’t think much of it as he appeared to be waiting for someone so went back to painting.
Quickly after that there was a loud explosion at which point the pupil was shocked to see Teacher Serafin Villahermosa Jr (36) had been shot and badly wounded he later died. The attack happened towards the end of the day at Tubod elementary school.
A second teacher Roger Maunes was also injured in the shooting.
Another school shooting occurred back in February in Argao which resulted in yet another murder.
Cebu Schools Division Supt. Arden Monisit said he will order schools to open at 7:30 a.m. and close by 5:30 p.m. with a guard stationed at the gates.
Monisit said the Department of Education in Central Visayas (DepEd-7) officials met to map out plans to secure the schools.
It appears the gunman entered the school without difficulty since the schools lone fence can be easily opened. The principle Daniel Demetrio said that he had restricted access due to security issues but nearby residents complained as they cross the school property to get water daily. Although a Tanod is always posted at the main fence. Monisit said he didn’t see anyone guarding the fence when he visited yesterday.
My big question though that nobody seems to have even attempted to cover is why are the teachers being shot in the first place and by whom? Is it unrelated to the schools or is it an attack on education?
