I am not sure if it runs the same for others but my heritage is something I am not only proud of but something that is a part of me. My wife April seems to understand it and feels it, a prime example was her current pregnancy which our doctor didn’t expect our son to survive as the months went on he grow stronger and from a close shave he has become a strong son which we await his arrival. The doctor said to my wife “he is a fighter” and she was surprised with his recovery. At the same time April was thinking and said to me later that “yes its because he has Scottish blood”. Which I can not attest against as I know how I am and not sure if others are the same.
Scotland has a stereotype of drinking and violence at the same time I drink but its not really an issue but my defence mechanism is probably a lot more severe than many people. If someone broke into my house for example I wouldn’t let them leave alive. A discussion came up tonight about not wearing my gold chain when I am out on my bike because there is people that would shoot me to take it. Response came well it will take more than one shot to kill me.. and I think that is part of the Scottish aggression because even when odds stack against us its more of a quick shot of whisky and a “to hell with it” than it would be a surrender.
I have noticed it throughout my life where things seemed to differ from friends or people I know. I have had fights where its has been 5 people against me and sometimes knifes were used at the same time here I am. I think its down to a fact of not expectation of being killed bt that we concentrate on a single goal such as beating someone who is attacking us rather than worrying about the problem.
The other thing with my heritage though is that hearing the bagpipes or national anthem you know where you belong.. the same can be said when crossing the border from England to Scotland seeing the mountains and green lands you know your home..
I don’t go home enough but always know when I arrive I am home and I belong.. the family loyalties and ties have stood the test of time and something I haven’t seen replicated anywhere else.
