Rattan and woven furniture – Cebu, Philippines

furniture makers workshop

I have been busy asking around trying to locate manufacturers of furniture to offer products at below mall prices. I am a keen supporter of local artisans as well as the fact I don’t see why we should be lining the pockets of big companies when we could be buying direct and giving a fair price to small businesses. Aga had come across this company on his travels so we headed over for a look to see what they have on offer.

Initially I thought this was a panel being built but its actually floor matting. Very sturdy at the same time it has given me a solution to the open plan apartment on top of the old internet cafe for a partition that isn’t going to take up too much space. Owner wasn’t around today so still waiting on a price for this but a good example of ongoing work.

The chairs you see above are the initial carcass frames that the rattan or plastic is woven over (they do both types here plastic or rattan). Lumber looks fairly solid and told its termite proof.

The rocking chair and reclining chairs below are also awaiting price but we have one here already. That’s seen a lot of use outside. Comfy to lay back and enjoy the slow pace of life.

The furniture you see below are the different colours available for table and chair sets. The one in the photo in white consists of 2 x chairs + 1 sofa + the small square table for P23,000 which is at least P7,000 cheaper than the mall price.

On top of that they are prepared to make furniture to order. Or in my case I am taking a chair there for covering as its already worn. Bit of an important find as many of the bigger companies aren’t keen on trading outside the companies they are already dealing with or more likely are worried they will lose big contracts if their client finds out they are selling direct to public or to other traders. The other reason I wanted to post this is many people seem to open restaurants here and getting the “right” furniture for your operation is also budget conscience and I am looking to develop these types of ventures to assist other businesses.

I have been in Bacolod now for 2 weeks and moved into my apartment, a small 2br. I am also doing the same thing here looking for local furniture makers and buying from them. I am currently sleeping on a mattress and only purchased a computer desk and kitchen items. Most from the local market not the malls. I love your blog, keep it up. Mike

Thanks for the positive feedback Mike 🙂 agree also the quality of local made furniture is a lot higher than the malls. I found the laminated furniture I bought for general day use has all had its chipboard blown as the laminate itself is as thin as paper. Several grades lower than I have seen in the UK giving it a survival time of less than 12 months instead of years.
