Philippines Expat: Building an apartment in the Philippines

After completing our internet cafe we began construction on the first apartment. This video covers the construction phase and a few lessons we learned along the way.

For example it is common for people to bury the pipework in concrete in the Philippines. Where I prefer it to be surface mount or accessible in some other way for maintenance. Extremely common for GI Pipe to also rust like crazy something else to be aware of if building property in the Philippines.

The other major issue I noticed is that even teaching people new methods of working as soon as you turn your back they go back to the old ways. Tiling with a bed of cement 2 – 3 inches thick is normal in the Philippines. Which takes 3 – 5 days to dry out. But a good screed with adhesive you can walk on the tiles within 4 hours. After showing the guys how to do it I left them to get on with it. Returning to find they went back to the way they’ve always known even if slower and wastes resources.
