Philippine Oriole Tyler (Oriolus steerii)

Philippines Oriole tyler (bird)The Oriole Tyler is a species of bird endemic to the Philippines in fact was the national bird until its replacement by the Monkey eating Eagle.

It habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests. Its fairly common throughout the Philippines although the last sighting of the bird on Cebu island was in 1906 and now believed to be extinct due to the lack of forest on the island as well as hunting.

Here even on the outskirts of a city I find locals with air rifles hunting birds to eat so wouldn’t surprise me that their numbers would be in decline to fill the table. Sad to see yet another creature under threat within the Philippines though.
