Martin Williams A British National Gruesomly Murdered in Tagbilaran City (Mansasa Dist.)

I joined a new forum today.. not because I am going against my word of not using forums but in the hope I can help this one kick start.. and maybe get some new developments.. anyway one of the first articles I came across was the murder of Martin Williams who died a horrific death and I worn you below is as much details I can find and my thoughts are with the friends and family involved.

Well this isn’t really the nicest way to kick of discussion forums but I think it’s important to share this story.
About a year ago I met an Englishman (Martin) who’d just moved to Panglao with his Filipina wife and newborn daughter.  Amazingly Lea and his wife knew each other from friendster where they’d met and complained about the English weather and such.
So Martin tells us they’re moving here for good.  He’s a friendly bloke but overconfident – naive about the Philippines and not listening to advice.
He proceeds to build a beautiful house nearby and then rents a bar premises for his wife to run.  However in the meantime there have been some family problems.  In the UK Martin
admitted he was very jealous of other men with his beautiful young wife and overprotective because of the attention she received from men.  Here the shoe is on the other foot, Martin
is the one getting all the attention from the pretty young girls and it seems he likes it a little too much.
So the bar opens and Martin is running it.  He dubbed it ‘She bar’ and actively attempted to make it appear like a girly bar, thinking this will bring him custom.  He employs only young female staff.  Here in Panglao there aren’t any establishments like that, it’s not allowed.  Furthermore any prostitution there may be is very hush, hush – most men wanting girls go to Cebu as it’s not (to my knowledge) readily available in Tagbi either.  Not that I"ve ever looked…  So the bar name and theme doesn’t really go down too well with the locals (expat or pinoy), nor I think with his wife.  In the end she leaves and returns to England with the child, in order to stay with Martin’s family and (allegedly) attempt to get residency there.
Meanwhile in the bar, Martin is having a great time, there isn’t many customers however rumour has it that he’s sleeping with his 17 year old staff.  This rumour is consolidated later when a court case against him for statutory rape is apparently started.  It wasn’t just at the bar that this happened though, often the bar would be closed for an evening as Martin was partying away in Tagbilaran or Cebu.  In the time since another case has allegedly been started by another girl in Tagbilaran against him.
Also one of the reasons that the bar doesn’t have a lot of custom is Martin tried to discourage local Filipinos from drinking there.  He once told me of how when a large group of local men came in for a drink he ‘went up to the ringleader, stood right in his face, gave him a bottle of rum and told them not to come back to his bar’.  Recounting this tale of how he’d faced up the locals and kicked them out he was clearly proud of himself and pleased with his cunning.
I was shocked and I tried to tell him that taking such a confrontational stance wasn’t a good idea but it didn’t seem to sink in.
Back in January his wife returned from England as without Martin she’d been refused a visa extension.  She stayed here in Panglao or in Tagbilaran.  It appears that there was problems sorting out an amicable settlement.  AS I understand she wanted some support for the child and a part of the bar or house.
Then something shocking happened – someone came past the bar whilst Martin was drinking there and took two shots at him before speeding off on his motorbike.  The first shot ricochet through the picket fence and made a hole in the plaster of the bar, about 4 feet from Martin, the second skimmed off the top of a table and then went through the arm of the bar stool he was sitting on.  After this, I stopped dropping into the bar for a quick beer with him – I just didn’t feel safe sitting next to him.
Martins response to this was to hire himself a personal bodyguard and print flyers and posters offering a cash reward of 2000000 peso for information leading to an arrest – wanted posters.  He seemed convinced that his wife was behind the attempt but there is a lot of speculation locally that it could be due to some of the other things I’ve related in this post.
Apparently later in another incident someone came to the bar and offered to pay one of the staff to put poison in his drink.
I’m sure by now you know where this story is heading…  Martin was found recently dumped in the Mangroves near Tagbilaran.  According to the rumour mill the police were looking for him to arrest him on the rape charges.  He’d knife wounds on his arms (suggesting self defence) and had been disembowelled, quite possibly whilst still alive.

This is such a sad story and the worst part I feel is that the conclusion was preventable, this kind of gruesome murder can never be condoned nor accepted but it so easily could have been avoided.  If only he’d listened to folks and not been so confrontational, if only he’d moved away after the first attempt.
Personally I warned him and tried to explain that his behaviour was out of line.  Life is cheap here and you can’t do things here that you wouldn’t do back home and to always remember you’re a guest.  Here rather than swearing at you people can take exception and become a real threat.
RIP Martin Williams.

From another friend :-

Part 1

The news I am about to tell is for a mature audience.
The details of this event will be described graphically.
and in order of sequence in respect to being a good friend  with the victim and the only one here to write about the case from the first attempted homicide.
There was also a second homicide attempt
Then the final homicide attempt was gruesome down to the last detail.
I will post about the deadly grotesque state in how my friends body was found.
Before going into details of this mornings really horrible findings I will post my write up from an interview i had with Martin in early January.
Martin Williams age 43 from Liverpool England. Married to a Filipina in England in an arranged wedding in England, A friend of martins introduced his wife friend via mail. The wife of Martin is a friend of his friends Filipina wife.
When i met Martin over a year a go he told me he was leasing a bar and had a wife who was really mean to him. He also said the wife had run off to another province with the couples baby that is born in England.
He also told me about the property and 10mllion house he had built in panglao, the house is very big and very beautiful.
I warned Martin not to be to trusting.
7-9 months later my friend calls me and tells me he needs my help to expose his story and that he has an alleged suspect trying to kill him. We had met later in the morning at Gerry’s Grill. That is when Marten told me that someone in black pants and a black shirt had come from behind the bushes and fired two live ammunition aimed and intended for him.
I will post up the first rough draft to my firs write up regarding Marten and what he told me during the interview. I will then post some of what I said in a column in the newspaper in a second follow up interview
.
Then i will go into the gory and horrid way in how my British foreign friend was murdered.
When I introduced Marten to Atty. Lim Martins exact words were "I am worth more dead than alive!"
If I can not finish this build up of events then i will work on it after I wake up as it is almost 430am here.

Part 2

British bar Owner nearly missed by assassinators Bullets
Martin Williams a British national from Liverpool England was a near miss target two times in a shooting incident last Sunday night inside his business establishment “She Bar” located on Rona’s corner, and near to Alona entertainment center located Tawala, Panglao Island.
Martin was sitting at his bar side counter entertaining British guest when all of a sudden his doorman shouted out loud “He has got a gun!” warning employees and patrons inside the establishment while two long calibre rifle bullets were fired off inside of the foreign owner’s establishment according to Williams and his report with both the tourism police and the local municipal PNP station of Panglao.
Williams told Bohol media that he believes the bullets were intended for him in last Sunday’s incident that had occurred around half past eleven in the evening.
Williams said he was able to get the customers and his employees to safety by letting them run out the back door since it was the disco room that they had run into at his establishment.
Williams said that he can not recall having any grudges or any reason as to what could be the motive for the incident that had taken place last week at hi bar.
Around 11 o’clock PM last Sunday Jan, 11th, two witnesses am Angelina Arboleras and a Teresita Cardiente 23 years of age saw an unidentified male person wearing long black pants and a black tee shirt who had appeared in front of the She Bar establishment and pulled out a an unidentified fire arm two times while using a silencer towards the inside of the bar. The first bullet hit the bamboo fence and scathed along top the table and landed down on the bar’s lower concrete portion.
The second bullet fired landed into the corner portion of the bar under the bar. Both two pieces of ammunition were recovered at the crime scene and the evidence is being held at the Tawala PNP Tourism police outlet post.
Martin said in the interview that it had taken him around ten minutes to notify the tourism police about one minute walking distance from his place..
In his life right at hand Williams’s number one priority and concerns is his life’s safety being that he is a foreign business owner here. And that he hopes that the police and the provincial governor make steps in preventing such things as what took place from happening again.
Williams also told to the local media that he is planning to meet up with Bohol’s provincial Governor Erico Aumentado and would like to discuss such matter’s as being able to motivate and move police in a much faster and better way in protecting the safety and life of those who come to be tourist and are planning on becoming foreign investor’s here in Bohol.
Williams enjoys being able to live and own a business in Bohol but would like to see that safety be faster and better improved.
After the shooting incident had taken place in William’s bar he said on Monday the following day he made fast action in hiring for himself his own personal bodyguard who now goes to work with him and goes home with him to live.
Williams said he is adamant in capturing his suspect shooter and said that he is willing to give out a cash reward of PhP 20.000.00 for the direct information leading to the actual arrest and prosecution.
As of late Friday night when the Bohol standard tried to follow up this crime situation in Panglao according to mayor Acala’s Secretary Arthur B. Arboladura the mayor had not yet been informed of the incident taking place in what will soon become a prime tourist destination for Bohol.
The right informant person who gives out the proper information that leads to the actual arrest will be kept confidential regarding his identity.
Williams has made flyers in the binocular language for locals in Panglao in order to inform them that there will be a cash reward and already has it posted at his bar where the crime scene crime had taken place.
Other foreign business management from Alona Beach shared with the media after interviewing Williams, that what has happened last Sunday in Alona at “She Bar” has everyone on edge who is a foreigner handling a business in Alona Beach Panglao these past few day’s.

Part 3

Shortly after the article was published another man was hired and had brought a bottle of poison and placed it on the bar in front of one of Martins bar owners and offered here money to poison her boss.
Until now I have saved some of Martens text the one explaining the poison is still in my phone.
The guy hired to do the job was also the x boyfriend of the bar employee she reused to do the offer.

Part 4

He complained to me about the harassment of the Panglao Tourism police.
He told me they harassed him constantly. They were even going to houses and trying to convince young girls who knew Martin to lie and say that he had raped them and that they would be guaranteed 5000 peso’s
A couple of girls made sworn affidavits that they were asked to go up against martin.
Some one has to be behind this and maybe they are canvassing behind VOWC.
I will get into that later.
I told my publisher Atty. Lim who is Martins Atty that is seemed rather strange how one Atty. here has a double case in one weeks time that has two wives both with murdered husbands?
I would hate to be in her shoes to VIA BOHOL MURDER and now Alona Panglao’s "SHE BAR" owner. Both her clients husbands are murdered.
Martin spoke to me often during the week at either Bojols, Brewpoints, Gerry’s grill, Dunkin Donuts, ICM, we would take snacks together.
I always told him to be careful.
We had even talked about and tried to make appointments with the Governor to introduce a new foreigner association but the Governor is always out.
Yesterday Martin was to see Atty. Lim but said he was in Ubay and told Atty. that he would see him yesterday at 9am.
Marten never showed up for his appointment. Martins was found murdered yesterday along the shores of Mansasa bay.
His stomach parts were found hanging from tree’s he was stabbed and slashed 14 times. After the brutal killing he had been dragged some 30 metres to the shore.
The trail of blood was the clue. I would like to know where is this so called trusted lady friend of his who told Marten she was a tour guide and a model from Cebu?
She use to accompany him and I also told Marten be careful about everyone here. She worked in his bar.
She had some sort of pains a couple weeks ago he took here to the hospital they were staying in a local hotel while having court cases in town.
Martin was a great person he had a good heart and he was treated like crap!
One night in Alona a Filipino had an accident on his motor Martin loaded him into his own truck and took him all the way to tagbilaran hospital. Unfortunately the motor victim passed away a couple of hours later.
Martin had many friends here both foreigner and Filipino. I am sorry my mind keeps going back to the morgue scene when Atty. Lim and I had gone together to see Marten sewn up cold bloated body embalmed waiting for today’s visit from the NBI.
I stood at the door crying with my daughter looking at a sweet friend who I could barely recognize. I think I am tired and I have had a long day. Atty. I’m was also angered at who could be so brutal and and was kept busy using my Camera’s taking pictures.
I need to end it here. I am to upset to go on mu
ch further.

Part 5

Marten was never proven guilty of the charges. Tourism police will do anything to make some money on the side.
I was told by Martin that mothers and they’re daughters were approached by PNP members to allege fake charges against Martin as a rapist.
The girls I heard were supposedly told that if they had went up against Martin they would be guaranteed 5000 peso.
Certain panglao police members have been known to haggle foreign tourist and take advantage of them.
I am telling you Martin had become a very dear and loved friend of the Atty. Lim family and any other business man or friend he made here see’s martin as not the picture that is being painted by some people here.
Two suspects are in custody I have both names and one is a woman and the other is a  young high school boy.
He had attended Manga High School.
The girl was aprehended in Siera bouilunas, and the boy in town.
The boy confessed so far into stabbing Martin JUST 5x’s
The investigator told me today that the motive in why the young boy stabbed Martin was because of getting into a confrontation.
Supposedly according to the alleged suspects hear say Martin picked up a large object and then the boy went for the stab.
1-2-3-4-5-?-?-?-?-?-?-?-?-?
I was not informed of the girls words as far as how she had testified because while i was interviewing Inspector E. Chan he was ordering his boy’s to go after the girl in seira boulinas police headquarters and bring her into the Tagbilaran city police station for questioning and to hold her into custody.
Both alleged suspects are in custody as until now.
Later i will add an email from Tony Harris who has informed me that he has contacted already the British Interpol and martins parents.
The British embassy is handling the dispose of Martin …
I would hope?
Many friends of Martin who know martin are pissed that they say he is a chicks boy and chasing girls what freaks and I really want to talk to the security guard at the place that said that.
Cover up or big time ruthless fabrication. If we kill a man for being a chicks boy then I maybe the world would have more women then men living in it.
So next time i see a chick boy I was just call him "MARTIN".
This chick boy rape case s*** blows my mind maybe 2-3 nights a week we spent many a night chatting at in town establishments until often 2am or 3am and in no way is he how or near to how they describe him.
I asked the investigator to show the proof?
The security guard words only are good enough for him? That’s wrong!
Martin checked in with an employee of his who was a witness in his previous court cases they would check in there so they would not have to drive far from his house in Panglao to his atty. appointments and his court appointments.
the exact reason martin had text to me saying he was going to pay an amount of money to lim the following morning since he had missed his appointment the day before for taking back his friend to her province.
Martin had asked for some foreigners to sit in on his restraining order case this Friday for moral support.
It’s too late for that what has been done has been done.
I did fulfil a dream of Martins and that was I started an International association here that we had discussed last week together to help those foreigners coming here who have harassing law on them or have been victims in a crime.
I had taken his picture to the meeting today and placed it on the table beside the picture in a local newspaper that had showed his body lifeless and mangled.
We the foreigners and the Filipino of the group friends of Martin will not stand for this as accepted excuses or reasoning to brutally murder someone.
I will post our manifestation, letter of comprehension later on that we signed today.
The Juvenile Justice Act law had better not play any role in this case what so ever Martin would never hurt anyone he would try to help the person instead.

The article goes on and is still awaiting the complete story but there are a lot of things said that I want to make a point over running a bar with GRO`s has been the downfall of many foreigners in the Philippines, If someone is trying to kill you “leave” if your breathing you can start again life is cheap here currently you can be dead tomorrow for around £50.00, don’t mess around with girls there are enough disputes with locals between each other over women don’t invite trouble. Don’t rely on the Police there are many foreigners I am aware of who have had as much problems with Police as they have with criminal activity, Don’t buy a big house this isn’t the first case I’m aware of that the showing of a lot of money has brought disaster.

Now why did I publish this article? Simply I see people making the same mistakes regular with the “It wont happen to me” attitude. I’m telling you now it can and does happen take a reality check..

2 Arrested in connection with Martin Williams murder.

In its manhunt operations police arrested on Thursday two youngsters involved in the brutal killing of British national Martin Williams (aka Martin Hawthorne) who was found dead Tuesday morning in Boloc-boloc Spring, barangay Mansasa, this city.

The City Police confirmed they arrested one Christian Gulle, 22 years old, and his female teenage companion, 19-year old Irene Borja, both residents of barangay Mansasa.

Operatives found an identification card of Gulle at the crime scene which gave them a lead to arrest the male assailant who was at his parents’ house Thursday morning.

Investigators said Gulle admitted to stabbing Williams 14 times after the victim allegedly tried to rape and hurt his teenage companion.

Gulle confessed that he met Williams Monday night at Bojol Grill where both shared food and drinks.

Later that night, at around 10 p.m., Williams purportedly invited Gulle and Borja to continue their drinking spree at Boloc-boloc Spring, just about a hundred meters from the Bohol Mangrove KTV Bar and Lodging house where the British man was checked in.

According to Gulle, he was a few meters away from Williams and Borja whom he believed to have been bathing at the spring when he heard the latter shout. Upon rushing to the scene, Gulle said he saw Borja lying on the ground and in pain. He said he tried to help the girl get up but Williams allegedly started shouting at him which he could not understand.

Gulle admitted "things happened so fast" and when he took his knife to stab Williams several times, he did not stop as he was scared that the heavily-built foreigner would get back at him..

Gulle provided policemen the identity of his alleged cohort (Borja) who sought refuge in the house of a brother-in-law in a remote barangay in Sierra Bullones,.

She was arrested by elements of the Sierra Bullones Police Thursday afternoon and was later turned over to the Tagbilaran Police who launched a full investigation regarding the suspect.

Williams, 43, had been wearing just sandals, shorts and t-shirts and was dead for several hours when his body was discovered, according to Dr. John Paul Bernaldez of the city health office.

Williams, of Liverpool , United Kingdom operates the She Bar in barangay Tawala, Pangalo town.

The victim had been dead for over six hours when his lifeless body was recovered at about 6 a.m. yesterday, according to Dr. Apollo John Bernaldez of the City Health Office.

Williams checked in at Bohol Mangrove KTV Bar and Restaurant at around 7:50 p.m. Monday. According to Nilo Salingay, a staff, Williams was a regular customer and usually gets a room for an overnight stay together with a lady friend.

However, the victim was alone when he registered at the lodging h
ouse Monday night, Salingay said.

Salingay said Williams went out of the lodging house a few minutes after checking in at around 8:15 p.m. The British national however left his Honda XLR-200 motorcycle at Bohol Mangrove.

SHOOTING INCIDENT

Estranged from his Filipina wife and daughter, Williams was supposed to appear on a court hearing this Friday for one of two charges of rape.

Last January 11, Williams had been the target of gunmen while he was tending his bar in barangay Tawala, Panglao.

Williams was sitting at his bar side counter entertaining guests shortly before midnight when he was shot twice by an unidentified man riding a motorcycle. The bullets missed, hitting the bar’s bamboo fence and a table.

Based on a blotter he filed at the Panglao Police Station, Williams said the bullets were clearly intended for him.

Williams said he could not recall having any grudges or any reason as to what could be the motive of his attackers.

Concerned of his safety, Williams hired a bodyguard and offered a cash reward of P20,000 for information leading to the arrest of his assailants.

Unfortunately this kind of thing happens all to often in this country and the cases rarely if ever get solved . The bar business is especially difficult to be involved in if one has ” ladies ” on staff .

As a foreigner you DO NOT have the same rights and privileges as a native so do not fool yourself into thinking so . And in most cases it is not your word against an accuser because if the accuser is a native you will have to prove your innonence not the other way around . Remember , this country does not have a jury system so you are at the mercy of the Judge , period .

I can’t speak for Bohol or Panglao though i have visited both . But the point is this kind of thing happens all over the Philippines . Viglante justice is a part of Philippine culture and in the real world the good guys don’t always win .

    Your right there Alan,
Another thing I would like to point out is that a lot of Filipinos feel the same frustration on these legal problems. Although mainly getting feedback from OFWs although we have less rights everyone feels helpless in these types of situations or even ones more minor its a difficult world we live in and living in the Philippines has to be by choice and be realistic or sooner or later someone is going to throw you to the wolves.

This story is so close to one that is going on in my family at the moment. My Dad a met a young phillipino woman on an internet site. He went over there, I think near to Cebu, a couple of months ago to meet her, and now is due to go over again next week.
She is apparently pregnant with his child already and they are engaged to be married.
I was worried for his safety from the start, as he is wanting to move over there and build a house for this woman and her family, and already seems to have forgotten about us, his real family back home.
However, after reading this horrific story I am terrified for his safety, I really want to stop him from going to live over there, or to at last have her move over here instead, but I am scared that, whatever I say will be taken in the wrong context and that it will just push him further away and and make him want to be over there even more.
What can I do? Any advice or guidance you can offer me would be greatly appreciated.

    Sarah.
