Manila hit by earthquake around an hour ago ( 30 April 2010)

Im miles away from Manila in Cebu but there is predictions of a large quake to happen this year and literally at anytime. With the problems that faced Manila last year with the flooding and volcano which hit the capital badly it has no doubt put a lot of people on a cautious footing as the quake is already expected and thousands to die with it. I won’t give my opinion on what is likely to happen if at all but simply added a couple of articles below so you can make your mind up yourself :-

Big earthquake could hit Metro Manila anytime. The warning was disclosed by the United Nations and advised the Philippines to prepare for a big earthquake with a magnitude of 7 or maybe higher.

According to reports, the Philippines should prepare for the worst. The United Nations said that a tragedy will happen in the Philippines soon.

Kartoch, Head of the Emergency Services Branch of the United Nation’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs explained on BBC News that buildings such as hospitals, schools, and other establishments including residential houses would collapse, but apparently simulating the impact of the quake based on urban congestion, population and buildings quake resistance.

“You gonna have 16,000 buildings destroyed. You going to  have … 150,000 who are injured,” said Kartoch.

The news came out in Inquirer to warn the people of the up coming earthquake in Metro Manila. The warning is not to threaten the people, but to inform us to be prepared.

What to do before an earthquake?
Earthquakes strike suddenly, violently and without warning. Identifying potential hazards ahead of time and advance planning can reduce the dangers of serious injury or loss of life from an earthquake. Repairing deep plaster cracks in ceilings and foundations, anchoring overhead lighting fixtures to the ceiling, and following local seismic building standards, will help reduce the impact of earthquakes.

What to do during an earthquake?
Stay as safe as possible during an earthquake. Be aware that some earthquakes are actually foreshocks and a larger earthquake might occur. Minimize your movements to a few steps to a nearby safe place and stay indoors until the shaking has stopped and you are sure exiting is safe.

Let’s just hope that this doomsday prediction won’t happen, but let us allow ourselves to be prepared when this happens.
