I have put off writing this review since it will be the harshest one I have ever written. I know if I can’t say anything nice, I shouldn’t say anything at all, but I feel that is irresponsible in this case. To begin with there is no beach! That muddy brown strip – that is the beach! Where it appears to be sand, that is a super thin layer of sand. Maybe at one point in time there was sand brought in here and it was a beach, but now there is nothing. Why would you come to Cebu if you didn’t want some beach?

Next food, just ok. In fact, that should be the theme of this hotel “Just OK.” The food isn’t awful, but it’s not spectacular either, nor is it cheap for what it is. And there is nowhere else to go! No other restaurants anywhere nearby! If you stay here for any period of time you will find yourself ordering the one thing you liked over and over since the rest is mediocre.

The rooms are fine – nothing special. But they are pretty pricey for the Philippines and for what they are – just OK. There was an issue with the air conditioner in ours, so the room was wet all the time. And we had booked our friends in the other balcony room, but there was an issue with the air conditioner in there as well, so they weren’t even allowed in that room and had to stay in a room with no view, except for the burning pile of garbage from the house next door.

Service is just OK. It was slow. And things were forgotten. They charged us $8 or $9 for a pina colada that nowhere near resembled a pina colada – whoever made it clearly had never had one. I’m glad they make an effort to hire girls from the local village to work here, but then if you do that, then you need to train them properly – both they and the guests will appreciate it!

The owners gave off a very weird vibe – and since it does feel like you are staying in their home, that wasn’t the most welcoming of feelings. At times, the woman made you feel like you were putting her out by asking for a drink (when she was standing behind the bar!).

Pool is small. I swim a lot of laps – but it wasn’t really possible here – only a couple of strokes and then had to turn.

I emailed ahead to say I would need the internet for work while I was there and did they have it. They did and said they have dial up – it was super slow! And there was only one connection, so if someone else was on, I was out of luck. They never said anything about a charge, not in my emails ahead of time nor when we were there. They just added a charge to the bill at the end to our surprise!

In general, I would never recommend this to anyone. It’s far from the airport and quite isolated with no food options nearby. Other people left early while we were there as well. Clearly they aren’t leaving reviews! If you do find yourself staying here, do yourself a favor and get a day pass to the Alegre, which is about a 20 minute moto ride away and has a nice beach and good food. We spent our New Years Eve there and had a great time – they even made my friend a special vegetarian meal. When we got back to Manila and told family and friends our experience every single one said, you should have gone to Palawan. I would advise you to do the same – especially if your other option is Las Flores!!

Las Flores is indeed a wonderful getaway. We were greeted with fresh juice and a warm welcome for our late night arrival. The owners are very personable, helpful, obliging and accomadating. Basically they couldn’t have been any better, excellent, five star! On a daily basis they personally assisted us with arranging golf, a trip to nearby hot springs complete with picnic lunch, sightseeing to nearby towns, assisted us with transportation everywhere we went. The hotel feels like a very large home, very clean rooms, well trained and personal staff, good food served on the terrace overlooking the ocean, wonderful gardens and grounds meticulously cared for daily, nice pool, hammock, badmitten, kayak available, DVD Movies available, lots of interesting reading offered, daily newspapers….. on and on and on. If you are looking for a peaceful and relaxing getaway, this is the place. This area of the beach is not the white sands of Boracay, but it is still the ocean and beautiful especially when the moonlight hits the water while you are eating dinner, I found several sea shells and we walked the beach. Everything was very clean and neat and much appreciated. If we needed something everyone was obliging and cheerful all the time. We were here for a week and will have memories for a lifetime. My hats off to Ian and Virgie for a successful home away from home.

Liked — Staff, cleanliness, view of ocean, peace and quiet
Disliked — wished beach was white sand and less rocky

As a vacation resort that is advertised as secluded I was dissapointed to learn that it isn’t secluded in a good way. This small bed and breakfast is located an hour and a half away from Mactan Island. Speaking of the drive it was non stop traffic with poor views of the island, hardly the long and scenic drive one might expect to find seclusion. I can’t express how dissapointed I was when the taxi stopped in the middle of this small town in the middle of everything. The bed and breakfast is nestled in the middle of a small province. If you are dreaming of seclusion, this isn’t the place you are dreaming of. You won’t feel any further away from anything than you do at the Hilton Cebu or Shangrila on Mactan. The only thing it is secluded from is the airport. The bed and breakfast is not much more than a large house. The room was quoted as a King bed, it was a queen. The bathroom knob failed, locking me in the bathroom. The shower is neat but leaves you holding the shower wand with one hand and washing with the other, sound relaxing?

When choosing a resort on Cebu know what you want and know what you are getting. We wanted georgious views of the water and mountains. We got black polluted water with trash floating about and a limited peripheral view of the ocean. The beach was full of sharp rocks and shells. There are adjoining properties to the left and right that certainly take away from the secluded feeling. You may be able to walk down the beach five miles, but, you wouldn’t want to. The morning after our first night there was a small child relieving himself on the beach,
no. 2. I wanted a five star resort with full facilities. I got a three star Bed and breakfast with very little to do. I based my expectations on the full five star reviews that other people had bestowed upon the property. If you are a business class, world traveler and enjoy five star hotels and secluded beach resorts, you might not like this property. Just understand that the property is an hour and a half away from the airport, this does not buy you exclusivity or seclusion. You are just as close to the madness of everyday life here as you are in Mactan island at the Hilton or the Shangrila.

Hopefully if you have read this review you will at least know what you are getting. I felt as though the previous reviews and the description of the property on their website were somewhat disingenuinous.

The few things that I did like were the one on one customer service, we were the only guests at the moment, and the friendly staff. They were very nice and couldn’t have been more accommodating. The food was good, at least what we ate. The pina colada wasn’t good and perhaps wasn’t a pina colada at all.

I just wish someone had written a more honest review before I got here. Like I said, just know what you want and know what you are getting. There are many beautiful things to do and see in Cebu, but, don’t believe that you have to travel and hour and a half out of the city to see them.

      Liked — Friendly Staff
Disliked — Distance from city didn’t get my any further away from the madness.
