June 30th public holiday in the Philippines declared by outgoing President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo as a special non-working holiday.

For Filipinos and foreigners a like who are not aware June 30th is being declared a national holiday.The inaugural of President-elect Benigno Aquino III on June 30 has been declared by President Arroyo, who ends her nine-year term at the end of the month, signed the holiday proclamation following the recommendation made by Executive Secretary Leandro Mendoza.


Mendoza earlier said he recommended the holiday declaration to “allow Filipinos to witness the formal assumption to office by the country’s 15th President”.

Details of the holiday declaration will be divulged by Palace officials later today.

President Arroyo is mandated to leave the office after nine years in power on June 30, paving the way for the assumption of her successor.

Aquino, son of democracy icon the late President Corazon Aquino, has promised to resolve lingering problems of poverty and corruption in his six-year term. The forthcoming years will show if the promises will be made good or left to linger like so many predecessors.
