Its the small things in life that make it worth living

Being awoken at 7am to the sounds of my wife busy in the kitchen is pretty normal and I know many out there in the West will think shock horror a woman in the kitchen is it the 1950s still! but here its normal and I had been up until 1.30am painting so it was a bit of a surprise this morning to as although I had to go and get coffee from our Sari-sari (corner shop) I did come back to find some homemade bread already sliced, buttered and topped with raspberry jam.

bread, butter and raspberry jam

Nothing like warm fresh bread which actually tastes of.. well bread! because a lot of the bread here in the Philippines is terrible more like a budget loaf in the UK and that’s the good stuff. If you want good bread you have to make it yourself or if your really lucky have a wife who loves baking as well as cooking. The other key ingredients though were our French butter and ASDA (from the UK) raspberry jam although you can get jams locally but you don’t see many raspberries around.

All makes the boxes you send from the UK worthwhile and its something to look for when packing them is long-life goods that you will miss I have been home now for nearly a year and a half and still got enough tea for another year for example in fact I gave a box away to a friend in an emergency tea situation.

Have to admit mind I have simple tastes as long as I get bread for most things I am happy.. e.g. beans on toast, cheese on toast, bacon buttie. Struggle without a good curry but bread is the main one for me 🙂 I don’t know what it is that’s done to local bread but its beyond terrible which is why last time i was in the UK i shipped the breadmaker one of the best investments so far.
