Christine Gambito – Internet Personality, Actress, and Comedian
The number of internet personalities gaining the worlds attention is definitely growing rapidly, and one way or the other, one particular Filipino became a part of that list. Her name is Christine Gambito.
Christine Gambito, more widely known as HappySlip in the internet, is an actress, a comedian, and a widely known internet personality who happens to maintain one of the most-subscribed-to channels on YouTube.
Christine is born and raised in America with Filipino ancestry (mother side). She was, by the way, a registered nurse (RN) but her road to fame started with her small cameo appearances and playing small parts in tv commercials and movies and a couple of training videos…. Until she started doing comedic sketches in youtube.
“Instant video blogging, her first sketch, was originally broadcasted on September 6, 2006 and it featured Christine’s impersonation of four different characters, each representing a different video blogging style. Due to the positive response she received from the YouTube community, two of those characters (the teenager and the “soap opera” girl) were relived in the following videos, the latter becoming the first episode of a soap opera spoof featuring two twin sisters both interpreted by Christine Gambito.
Her second video was a bit different though, as it introduced many of the “recurring themes” in her life, such as her parents’ attitude towards her growing internet popularity and her family’s ethnic habits seen through the mind of an American.
Other notable sketches:
- Mixed Nuts— a video depicting what she would call “a typical family discussion” which was later awarded with the second place in the 2006 YouTube Video Awards for Best Comedy— and
- Mac Beautiful, her first musical video, an ironic cover of the song You’re Beautiful by James Blunt praising the beauty and efficiency of the Apple MacPro.
She later broadcast two videos containing original songs. And that’s just talent if you ask me.
Christine has also collaborated with fellow YouTube comedian Kevin Wu (KevJumba) and they were able to make making five videos together.
By the way, if you happen to wonder where she got he nickname “HappySlip”, it actually came from her mom’s mispronunciation of the word half-slip
Gambito attributes her nickname “HappySlip” to her Filipino mother’s mispronunciation of “half slip“.
As a child, my Filipino mom would always remind me to wear a half-slip with skirts. However, the way she would pronounce the phrase was misleading: “Your hap e-slip! Be sure to wear your hap e-slip!” So I naturally went around calling the thing a ‘happy slip,’ until friends at school corrected me by asking if I had a ’sad slip’ as well.
In her site, she explained that the phrase is not only a funny phrase from the past, but a reflection of what she would like people to feel while watching her videos. Hoping they will “slip into happiness” watching.
By the way, last January of 2008, Christine was appointed ambassador for Philippine tourism by the Department of Tourism.
Girl of Wit. Girl of Talent. Girl of Simplicity. Christine Gambito.
