Most people seem to end up here after becoming single for various reasons not sure what it is that encourages them to arrive but thousands do every year. The biggest reason people are here though comes down to one thing “girls” the Philippines has some of the most beautiful women in the world and lots of them, but it doesn’t stop there as attitudes are different compared to Western women where you may not even be given the opportunity to meet a girl purely because she thinks she’s better than you here its generally reversed roles. Difference I find though is the western men have experienced western women too often and are more likely to be accommodating to being approached by women in comparison because they know how it feels. At the same time most of the women approaching men here are beautiful and friendly looking for long-term relationships or marriage. So why move to Cebu as an expat? companionship and the chance to meet a woman you wouldn’t meet elsewhere. Others may say its the weather yet I find most people complain they can’t live without air-conditioning which tells me they don’t go out too often! On the other [...]

One thing about marrying a girl from the Philippines due to the way the emphasis is put on family life in the Christian belief you will rarely find a woman who doesn’t want to have children. Generally marriage = family and will be expected after settling down. If you don’t plan on having kids you need to make the woman aware at the offset. Now getting back to the topic as its something that has come up a few times in the last couple of years about how much does it cost for getting through the pregnancy and labour. The first thing you have to be aware of all the hospitals are charging different rates, there is no “fixed” pricing in place. We are based in Minglanilla where our personal costs are around P250 a visit to the doctors for a check up, ultrasound at the hospital is around P1,200 but we go to Gaisano Tubanok which has a clinic on the top floor which does ultrasounds for P500-P600 and we just take the report back to the doctor. The other thing to remember is that the hospital “WILL” try and sell you on using their equipment and its purely [...]

When I was back in the UK most people didn’t seem to know where the Philippines is or in fact anything about the country. So I was thinking today Why retire to Cebu, Philippines as an Expat? especially if you don’t even know the country. Then I started looking at my life back in the UK with how everything is being put into a little pocket of processing and that freedom as well as common sense is being removed rather rapidly. What do I mean? well its like SORN notices which for those of you who don’t know its a bit of paper that you send to the car tax office to tell them your not using your car and its off the road. Now may seem to make sense to some but with camera systems that can read registrations that tells the Police if the vehicle is insured, taxed and road worthy as well as who is driving it why do they need to hassle me to go to the post office or print off a document to mail into them? In the Philippines forget to register on time you get a small fine and that’s it in the [...]

You will hear of fixers, travel agents, private agents all wanting to sell you the service of going to Mandaue and processing it for you but do you need them? In reality the immigration office is like any other government office a little slow but generally will have a functional system in place. It has to its dealing with thousands of people! If you haven’t been before please read this article as it will tell you what to wear and how to find immigration. At the same time I would like to remind you that it is a government office which is why they expect you dress tidy. Appearance is important in reflecting respect of the service as well as personal pride, if you went to a job interview with shorts and a bermuda shirt as a lawyer do you think you would get the job? Well immigration officials expect to be treated in an office like manner. Doesn’t mean too fancy just “tidy”. At the same point everyone who does this for you wants a cut of the pie including immigration! I noticed last week when reading through on the expenses of an annual report for permanent residents like [...]

What I have found over the time I have lived in Cebu myself is it does offer accommodation for all walks of life, partly why the community as a whole doesn’t get on with each other. That said though it doesn’t mean its also a bad thing as this allows the “different strokes for different folks” to occur. If your getting on in age and tired of life where everyone starts to see you as an old guy rather than someone in an aging body I would strongly recommend making the plunge to come here. Could you imagine that even a guy in his 70s would find a partner without much problem and a partner being in her early twenties upwards? Well lets put it this way I see a lot of older guys here and only met 3 with women in their 40s the rest are generally 22+ which in Western circles may seem unacceptable but here in Cebu its accepted and you will find most people find it is normal. This is where different strokes for different folks comes in but like I said if your looking for that lease of life that a beautiful young lady can [...]

The other side of this is often the Philippines government is seen as being inactive but is it a case of it can’t cope?
