Dragon fruit in the Philippines

 Dragon fruit whole - Philippines

Bit of an odd looking fruit but thought we would give it a try as it may be something other people won’t do because they are about P60 each. The first thing is what do you do with it? Easiest thing to do is divide it with a sharp knife as the skin is fairly soft and will slice through easily.

The black and white mix does look a bit odd compared to other fruits we come across but would also add some colour and interest to a fruit salad.

The skin is then hand peeled to leave segments easy to eat. I then diced it up into chewable chunks and it was time for the tasting. Wasn’t 100% what to expect and April hadn’t tried it before either as she didn’t like the look of it but after I started eating away wasn’t long until April tried some.

Only way I can describe it as a chewable water melon as it only has a very subtle taste to it but the seeds make it crunchy amongst its soft white pieces.

Only real thing I can say when eating it though is that water melon is around P20 for a piece bigger than the Dragon fruit and a lot more juicy so not really sold on the Dragon fruit in comparison. But would be interested to see if the seeds can be used to make the plant grow.

I love dragon fruit. It has the natural elements to keep you hydrated while you are traveling. When at home I cut it into small chunks and freeze it. The eat it like popcicles. Not a lot of taste.. like eating watermelon in that way (although it does not taste like watermelon).
