MANILA, Philippines – Two persons died and another one was injured after a group of armed men fired at a group of voters lined up to vote at a polling precinct in Tugaya town, Lanao del Sur province, Monday morning.
Maj. Ferdinand Cacas, commanding officer of the Philippine Army’s 103rd Infantry Brigade, said the gunmen were able to slip into a national highschool in Tugaya town unchecked.
Cacas said troops securing the area were accosting the gunmen when they opened fire at the voters. The shooting incident took place around 10:45 a.m.
Voting at the national highschool has been suspended because of the shooting.
The provincial elections office in the province has also declared a failure of elections in the towns of Sultan Dumalondong, Tubaran, Masiu and Lumba-Bayabao municipalities due to lack of board of election inspectors and defective Precinct Count Optical Scan machines.
